Few houses capture the couture extravagance of the 1980s and 1990s as powerfully as Thierry Mugler. Sculpted silhouettes, architectural shoulders, waists cinched to the extreme: the French designer invented a heroine somewhere between goddess and cyborg, and his garments now rank among the most sought-after pieces in the vintage wardrobe. Born in Strasbourg in 1948, Thierry Mugler trained as a dancer at the Op\u00e9ra national du Rhin before building, through the 1970s, one of the most theatrical houses in Paris. His first personal collection, Caf\u00e9 de Paris<\/strong>, appeared in 1973, and in 1992 he presented his first haute couture collection at the request of the Chambre Syndicale.
