The story begins in February 1955, when Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel unveiled a revolutionary bag: the 2.55. The name itself was a statement of modernity, with "2" for February and "55" for 1955. At a time when women carried their bags by hand, Coco Chanel devised a long chain so the bag could be worn over the shoulder, freeing the hands entirely. The diamond quilting that became the house's defining signature was inspired by the jackets worn at the racetrack and the stable.

In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld, then artistic director of Chanel, reinterpreted this classic to create the Classic Flap, also known as the Timeless. He preserved the spirit of the 2.55 while reworking its most iconic details, producing the bag the world recognises today. In 2005, to mark fifty years since the original, the house faithfully re-released the vintage 2.55 under the name "Reissue."

Authenticating a Classic Flap relies on several precise points. The quilting must align perfectly, including across the flap and the back pocket. The double-C clasp should show the upper C passing over on the right and under on the left, a detail counterfeits frequently get wrong.

Inside, you will traditionally find a serial sticker affixed and protected beneath a clear film: its first digits indicate the year of manufacture, and from the 2000s onward the house introduced a discreet hologram.
